This Weekend in Ossining – September 28th & 29th

I try to share all Ossining events on our Instagram feed or stories, and if you follow us you probably know some weekends are busier than others.

This weekend happens to be a really fun one, from a modern-day treasure hunt at Teatown to free fishing lessons at our waterfront, there’s something to do for every family. And the best part is that almost all the events are free.

Here’s the rundown:

– Saturday September 28th-

9:00AM Beginners Yoga: Start the weekend with a Free Yoga Class at the Ossining Library. This program is for Teens and Adults, ages 12 and up. Please bring a yoga mat and blanket. Yoga is taught by certified yoga instructor Catherine Riedel.  More info about this event

10:00AM Music at The Market: Tom Fabry will be playing at the Ossining Farmers Market. More info about this event.

10:00 AM Geocaching at Teatown: A fun, family-friendly way to exercise your mind and body. Grab your smartphone and join Teatown guides to learn more about this modern-day treasure hunt. Pre registration required. You can register HERE. Free for Teatown members, only 8 dollars for non members.

11:00AM – 4:00PM Maryknoll Sisters Fall Festival: Music, vendors, food trucks, bubble show, exotic animal presentation, international crafts, homemade fall baked goods and a live raffle drawing! Free parking and admission. More info about this event

4:00PM Zumba: The last event of Mind, Body, Spirit Ossining 2019. Join Sue of Studio95  to experience the fun of Zumba. For all ages and Free. More info about this event

7:00PM Suzi Takahashi & Kristin Marting (HERE Arts) “THE STORY BOX”:
Takahashi and Marting are developing The Story Box, which uses a traditional form of Japanese storytelling called, kamishibai, to compare the lives a Japanese American today to a girl living in a 1943 internment camp. They will share an excerpted reading of the work then guide the audience through a group storytelling event. Participating audience members will select an image from which they will be invited to share a story about their own American experience with a small group of other audience members. They will follow the exploration with a talkback to ascertain audience reactions. In this way, the audience will have an opportunity to play an important role in developing the work.  More info about this event.

7:00PM Saturday Night Free Movie and Popcorn – The Secret Life of Pets 2: Max the terrier encounters canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a scary turkey when he visits the countryside. Luckily for Max, he soon catches a break when he meets Rooster, a gruff farm dog who tries to cure the lovable pooch of his neuroses. More info about this event.

7:30 Jazz at the Lodge – Alexis Cole:  Award-winning jazz vocalist Alexis Cole may be the most talented singer to ever hold a top-secret military clearance. A dozen albums into her critically acclaimed career, she may also be the best-kept secret in jazz, a status that’s certain to change as more people are discovering her for themselves. – Sunday September 29th –

10:00AM-3:00PM The Fable Weekly Market Place: Come say hello to the farmers, feed their beautiful free-range chickens, and shop the Market. More about this event.

11:00AM-12:00 Making Cyanotypes (photo prints without a camera) Workshop: Using light sensitive cyanotype paper, known to be popular amongst engineers and botanists alike, we will experiment with creating unique compositions with the silhouettes of things found outside the art center.
Use your findings to create a unique arrangement onto the paper, expose in the sun, and develop in water. It’s a completely safe process welcoming to all ages! More about this event.

12:00-4:00PM Family Fun and Fishing Day 2019: Catching live fish from the Hudson River
Admiring your catch in an observation tank before safely releasing it back to its watery home!

12:00-7:00PM Ossining Hispanic Festival – Segundo Festival Hispano en Ossining: Music, artists, food, jumping castles, crafts and more. Come enjoy an afternoon with your family and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Artists and folkloric dances. Local Hispanic Restaurants will be serving your favorite dishes! More about this event.

1:00PM Make Fairy Homes: Using natural items found on the forest floor, pinecones, twigs, pebbles, acorns, and more, construct a home for your favorite fairy or gnome to live in. For Families. More about this event.

2:00PM Ossining Arts Council ‘Art Speaks’: Jill Kiefer will talk about how to mount a group or solo art exhibit. Light Refreshments. More about this event.
